First Day of the 2009-2010 Session
Posted: August 11, 2009

On Monday, August 10, more than 800 students attended the first day of the 2009-2010 session. Charter Foundation Board President Billy Hatchett and board members Sal Genovese, Charles Petry and Arthur Hardy were on hand outside to greet students, as were Orleans Parish School Board Superintendent Darryl Kilbert, District III Board member Brett Bonin, Principal Alexina Medley and Assistant Principal Joe Gilyot.
Returning students and faculty were impressed with the more than one million dollars in improvements done over the summer, although some were not visible, such as underground plumbing repairs and roof repairs. Solar panels funded for by a grant from Nike/ENTERGY will soon be installed on the roof as “Easton Goes Green.”
Cafeteria repairs and the installation of new stairwell treads are now complete and replacement of the auditorium side doors will be done in early September. Renovation of the school’s front entrance included painting the façade and replacement of frames and hardware and the installation of new Brazilian Cherry doors.
In July some thirty college students, sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers, worked on landscaping and painted murals in the office and on the exterior gym walls.
Using a $2.4 million grant from Harrah’s and the OPSB, Windows of New Orleans will replace all 800 windows and will also waterproof the courtyard walls. The work will take most of the school year to complete.
Construction of the half-million dollar Warren Easton Health Clinic is well under way. Funding came from The Kellogg Foundation, Sandra Bullock, the San Francisco 49ers Foundation and the Warren Easton Charter Foundation

Sandra Bullock announced to a packed house that her contributions to Warren Easton were “the best investment I ever made.” She has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to help finance college scholarships, to purchase new band uniforms and video equipment and for the total renovation of the school’s 96-year old auditorium. At the event she made a significant donation to help fund the new school-based health clinic at Easton. Construction starts next month.
As part of the May 15 celebration, a fund raising drive was started to acquire a parcel of land next to the school for future development. The Warren Easton Charter Foundation, Inc. is recognized by the IRS as a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) corporation, and as such, all donations are 100% tax deductible.
