EASTON SENIORS EARN TOP HONORS

BILL GATES FOUNDATION
Warren Easton senior Curtrell India Charles was named a recipient of the Gates Millennium Scholars Program, which attracted more than 20,500 applicants. Charles was one of only 1,000 so honored. The scholarship pays full college expenses at the undergraduate level and can be renewed through the masters and doctoral level if certain criteria are met.

HONOR LOUISIANA YOUNG HEROES
Helen Merridy, a senior at Warren Easton Charter Senior High School, was one of eight outstanding Louisiana students receiving the 2009 Louisiana Young Heroes Award on April 22 in ceremonies at the Governor’s Mansion and the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Baton Rouge. The program honors students in grades 4-12 who have excelled in the classroom, made contributions to their community, overcome adversity and inspired others.

EXPANDED PARTNERSHIP

DELGADO COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Warren Easton has partnered with Delgado Community College, which offers dual enrollment to our students. In the spring of 2008 Warren Easton students earned 204 college credits; in the fall of 2008 Easton students earned 375 college credits and this spring our students will potentially earn 384 college credits. Delgado also plans to implement on the Easton campus the Health Center 21 Server and Curriculum program, which will help train students interested in the medical services field.

WARREN EASTON TEACHERS RANK AT THE TOP
According to data provided by LEA for the school year 2007-2008, Warren Easton has the highest percentage (84.2) of high school faculty in New Orleans who attained the HQE designation (Highly Qualified Educator). To achieve this status a teacher must hold a valid teaching certificate and must have met the requirements of the No Child Left Behind program.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

JCC SALUTES WARREN EASTON
At a special ceremony at the Jewish Community Center honoring Holocaust survivors who reside in New Orleans, Warren Easton was presented the Yom Hashoah Educator of the Year award for its commitment to teaching diversity and tolerance. Students and faculty were on hand to participate in the program. Easton representatives helped light the six-candle menorah, which honors the six million Jews lost in the Holocaust.

FRANK SPARKS CLASS OF 1986
Frank Sparks holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education from Xavier University and a Masters of Science in Mathematics from Loyola University. From 1990-2001 he taught Algebra 1 and Calculus at Easton, where he served as chairperson of the Math Department. He was selected as the teacher of the year in 1998. Sparks also taught at Delgado Community College and served as Math Curriculum Specialist in the New Orleans Public Schools System 2001-2005. He currently acts as Middle School Math Coach for the East Baton Rouge School Board.

LESTER LATINO (deceased) CLASS OF 1966
Lester Latino (1947-1981) coached at Holy Cross High School and Jesuit High School in New Orleans. He was also a licensed thoroughbred horse trainer. At Warren Easton he was captain of the football team and an all-state athlete. He was selected to the Gulf States All-Conference Football Team at Northwestern State University, where he captained the football team for two years. Lester Latino is a member of the college’s Hall of Fame. The school’s most prestigious athletic award is named in Lester Latino’s honor.

GLENN MCCARTHY (deceased) CLASS OF 1924
McCarthy (1907-1988) was known as the "King of the Wildcatters." He founded the Shamrock Hotel in Houston, which gained him national fame and inspired the fictional character Jett Rink in Edna Ferber's 1952 novel Giant, along with its 1956 film adaptation which starred James Dean in the role. He appeared on the cover of Time Magazine in 1950, when he was estimated to be worth $200 million. He owned 400 gas and oil wells in Texas and several companies, including two banks, a radio station, a magazine, a movie production company and fourteen newspapers.

DAVID BENELLI CLASS OF 1969
David Benelli holds a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Tulane University. He was a member of the United States Air Force and served in Viet Nam. He is a 34-year veteran of the New Orleans Police Department. Benelli was president of PANO from 1998-2006. He retired from the NOPD in 2007 with the rank of lieutenant and District Platoon Commander. David Benelli currently is area manager of Louisiana Spirit where he supervises crisis counseling programs for first responders impacted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

BOB REMY CLASS OF 1956
Bob Remy has served as the New Orleans Saints official statistician since 1976. He performed in the same capacity for the New Orleans Jazz (five years), the New Orleans Hornets (six years), Tulane University football (20 years), for the Sugar Bowl (25 years), for state football championship games (27 years) and for seven Super Bowls in New Orleans. Remy owns Louisiana’s most comprehensive sports memorabilia collection. He published the “Louisiana Sports Encyclopedia” in 1978. Bob Remy worked for the federal government for 41 years and served 42 years with the Louisiana National Guard.

SANDRA BULLOCK HONORARY
Honorary Warren Easton Hall of Fame inductee Sandra Bullock was born in a Virginia suburb of Washington, DC, to a German opera singer and a voice teacher. She attended East Carolina University in North Carolina, where she studied acting. Bullock achieved stardom in the smash hit Speed in 1994 and has appeared in more than 40 films. In 2006 she adopted Warren Easton as one of her favorite charities and has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the school, including funds for its scholarship program, for new band uniforms and for the renovation of the school auditorium.
