A New Vision
Posted: May 05, 2010
Warren Easton is excited to partner with “Sight for Students” through the National Association of School Nurses, of which our school nurse, Ms Cassondra Ferrand is a member. Warren Easton students have the privilege of having school site vision exams performed by Dr. Madeline Borne. The complete exam is performed at school and if glasses are needed, the students can choose from a wide variety of frames. Dr. Borne then delivers the glasses to the students on her next school visit. Every student who requires glasses will receive them regardless of their financial status. The program has been a complete success this school year and we are looking forward to continuing it in the Fall.

PHYSICAL IMPROVEMENTS
Health Clinic Construction is 80% complete on a project to renovate, expand and convert Easton's old Custodial Lodge into a School-Based Health Clinic to provide a convenient source of quality health and dental care for our students. The $700,000 project is funded by a combination of grants from the Kellogg Foundation, Ms. Sandra Bullock, Warren Easton Charter Foundation and the San Francisco 49ers Foundation. Work is expected to be completed later this spring.
Windows & Waterproofing Project Construction is underway on a $2.4 million project to replace all 525 original (1913) windows in the main school building and to waterproof the walls around the two rear courtyards. The project is funded by an allocation to the Orleans Parish School Board by the New Orleans City Council from part of the rent the City receives from leasing public lands to the Harrah's Casino. Work is expected to be completed early this summer.
Roof & Solar Project Construction was recently completed on over $500,000 in energy improvements funded by a grant arranged through ENTERGY - New Orleans. The work included a new energy efficient roof for the main school building as well as the installation of solar panels to collect and store free solar energy. As a bonus, the school's science department was provided with materials to monitor the solar electricity generation and to incorporate lessons so learned into the curriculum.
Sewer Improvements Although not glamorous, the work Easton has done over the past year beneath the school's foundation has gone a long way in keeping the school sanitary and operating efficiently. The school funded a $99,000 replacement of its main sewer lines under the kitchen and on the Salcedo side of the campus. Also, the Sewerage & Water Board built new connections to its lines under Iberville Street to improve the operation of the restrooms in Easton's gym.
