DONATIONS AND CONTRIBUTIONS
Posted: November 08, 2006
Warren Easton has been blessed with support from local groups such as Gulf Coast Bank & Trust, the Brown Foudnation and Ives Offiec Supplies. Cash donations have come from as far away as Japan and Germany.
* Rotary Club of America- Rotarians across the nation heeded a call for help from the New Orleans Rotarians, led by Henry Lowentritt, chairperson of the New Orleans Rotary’s Warren Easton Renovation Project, to aid the school with renovations. For two weeks during June, 2006, Rotarians from California, New York, Pennsylvania and the New Orleans area converged in Mid City and began to clean, scrape, and paint their way through Warren Easton. * American Luxembourg Society- The American Luxembourg Society donated substantial funds for the renovation of three science labs at Warren Easton. The society’s generous gift, promoted by Mr. Patrick Birden, president of the society, and supported by H.R.H. the Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg and the people of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, will provide students with proper science lab facilities which will enhance instruction and provide opportunities for students to perform experiments not otherwise possible. * While in New Orleans to perform at the Voodoo Festival, members of Duran Duran paid a visit to the school on October 27, 2006. Members toured the school site with Principal Alexina Medley. The Yearbook Staff hosted a Question and Answer session with members of the Student Council, Choir, Newspaper staff and the Eagle Marching Band. Duran Duran donated substantial funds to the school to put towards a new sound system for the auditorium. * The coordinators of PlayStation brought their newest game to Warren Easton and challenged 40 students to a tournament. The top three winners were awarded PlayStation prizes and games. Students challenged each other, and the PlayStation champs. PlayStation donated substantial funds toward the revamping of the school auditorium’s sound system. * Steve Rehage of Rehage Entertainment coordinated the visit of Duran Duran and PlayStation to Warren Easton. * Dick Flesher of Chicago worked tirelessly to acquire donations of art supplies, book bags, furniture and office/teacher supplies as well as Physical Education equipment to help Warren Easton start the school year. Through his efforts, the school was able to replace some of the equipment and furnishings either destroyed by the floodwaters of Katrina or the mold that invaded the building following the flood. * Jim Phillips and The Coeur d’Alene High School Concert Band presented a Hurricane Katrina Benefit Concert, October 26th, 2006 in the school auditorium in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The concert was well supported by the community, and the proceeds from the concert have been donated to the Warren Easton Eagle Band fund. * James Dean of North Carolina donated a professional quality saxophone for one of the students in the marching band. The saxophone arrived Friday, November 3 in perfect condition and will go a long way to helping one lucky student join in the band activities. * Tipitina’s Foundation-The foundation has donated funds for replacement of some band instruments which were lost during Hurricane Katrina. In addition, the foundation is considering including Warren Easton in its Spring Fundraiser. * Warren Easton alumnus Michael Morgan of South Carolina negotiated a donation of funds for the Warren Easton Football team to replace lost equipment. * School District 11, Colorado Springs-Night school teacher Diane Ciccarelli, worked tirelessly to coordinate surplus computer systems, student and teacher desks and other furnishings needed to re stock the school. Linda Jennings of FedEx coordinated the delivery of donated supplies. George Noble of the District 11 warehouse, Frank Bernhard and the warehouse crew and Beverly Infante of Configuresoft Corporation were all instrumental in identifying, acquiring and delivering the donation.
LIBRARY AWARDED ANOTHER GRANT
Posted: November 08, 2006
The Warren Easton High School library was selected to receive a grant from Dollar General for rebuilding following Hurricane Katrina. The library received the grant from the discount retailer and the American Association for School Librarians (AASL) to expand our library media program. Warren Easton is honored to be a grantee. "We were selected because our school library and our school librarian have been vital to enhancing the learning experience for children whose lives have been altered as a result of what has happened in the Gulf Coast" said principal Alexina Medley.
The grant will be used to purchase books, media, and library equipment that support learning in a school library environment and is part of "Beyond Words: the Dollar General School Library Relief Program." The $800,000 initiative is administered by AASL, a division of the American Library Association (ALA). The National Education Association (NEA) serves on the grant review committee.
"Supporting school libraries is crucial in order to restore the educational process in schools that have suffered a disaster," said AASL President J. Linda Williams. "School library media centers are places of opportunity where students can strive for and achieve success, develop a love of reading and explore the world around them through print, electronic and other media."
Nationally, students make 1.5 billion visits to school library media centers during the school year – to conduct research, check out books for leisure reading, use electronic resources and receive instruction on how to find, evaluate and use information from a variety of sources. "Following recent disasters in our country, we recognized the need for support of school libraries impacted by these tragedies," said David Perdue, Dollar General's chairman and CEO. "Through this program, we want to ensure that children whose schools have been impacted by a disaster have the opportunity to learn and grow through reading. This is particularly important when many children only have access to books at their school library."
